The department of instrumental performance began its professional activity in 2001. The opening of the department was preceded by considerable organizational work, the department was licensed to train specialists in the field of training 6.020204 Musical Arts * (bachelor), specialty 7.02020401 Musical Arts * (specialist) and 8.02020401 Musical Arts * (Master). The main task of the scientific and pedagogical staff of the department is the professional training of competent specialists for the educational sector of Ukraine, because the department trains teachers of music, teachers of ethics, aesthetics, artistic culture.
Head of the chair of Musical Arts and Choreography is Svyatoslav Martsinkovsky - Professor, Honored Worker of Culture of Ukraine, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Kherson State University Symphony Orchestra.
Highly qualified teachers of the chair form the music-performing culture, provide professional training for the future specialists, capable of self-realization, self-perfection in artistic and creative activities. According to the syllabus students study the following subjects: "Basic musical instrument" (piano, string instruments, folk, wind and percussion instruments), "Special musical instrument", "Additional musical instrument", "Conducting and reading scores", "Concertmaster class"," Orchestral class"," Ensemble", ”Instrumental science and fundamentals of instrumentation" and disciplines of musical-theoretical cycle.
Implementation of effective forms and methods of teaching in the pedagogical process, improvement of program material, development of pedagogical technologies and innovative methods allow the department to educate specialists at the level of modern higher education requirements. Considerable attention is paid to the student scientific and creative society, which prepares and conducts student scientific conferences, creative reviews. Students participate in the All-Ukrainian Scientific Olympiads, sessions of the Small Academy of Sciences.
The teaching staff of the department participates in the development of an initiative research topic "Ways to improve the professional training of music teacher in the context of the Bologna Process".
The scientific interests of the department teachers cover the following issues:
- Ukrainian folk instrument science and fundamentals of instrumentation, orchestral conducting (Professor Martsinkovsky S.);
- formation of professional skills of masters of musical art (candidate of pedagogical sciences, associate professor Shchedroloseva K.);
- development of the creative personality of the conductor (associate professor T. Kornisheva);
- Contemporary Ukrainian Music (N. Staryuchenko, PhD);
- factors of influence of the teacher's individuality in the context of formation of professional and ethical and moral qualities of the student (senior lecturer I.M. Marcinkovskaya);
- questions of orchestral conducting and instrumentation (senior teacher Petrov K.);
- methodological foundations of instrumental performance (teacher Suslova M.).
Within the framework of international cooperation, the best students of the department have the opportunity to continue their studies at the Pomeranian Academy in Slupsk (Poland). The tradition of the department is to hold a regional scientific and methodological seminar on topical issues of music pedagogy.
In 2001 the department started the Regional Competition of Performers on Musical Instruments “Musical Tavria”, and later the All-Ukrainian Festival of Conducting Arts “Musical Tavria”, which raises Kherson to the level of well-known centers of culture of Ukraine. The purpose and aim of the festival is to identify and support music-gifted young people and to exchange experience in training of young conductors.

The specificity of student preparation is concentrated in the performing activities of students and teachers of the department, which is represented in various ways by the creativity of artistic groups:
- Kherson State University Symphony Orchestra (artistic director and principal conductor - head of the department of instrumental performance and music theory, Prof. Martsinkovsky, conductor senior teacher Petrov);
- Orchestra of Folk Instruments (artistic director and chief conductor - senior teacher Petrov);
- Ensemble of violinists (artistic director - teacher Dubovik);
- Ensemble of Guitarists (artistic director - senior lecturer Yatsenko);
- Ensemble "Triumphal" (artistic director - senior teacher Petrov).
- Trio of bandurists "Resurrection" (artistic director - teacher Yastrebov);
In the repertoire of the groups are works of world classics, old and modern Ukrainian composers. The concert activity of the collectives is a laboratory for forming students' performing skills, maintaining the prestige of high professional art. Among our graduates are artists of the Philharmonic and Theater orchestra, radio and television, teachers of music and arts schools, music teachers and singing schools.
