The Department of Physical Education Theory and Methodology was created as soon as the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports began to active, in April 1994. The activity of the Department is aimed at the preparation of specialists of specialties 014 Secondary Education (Physical Culture); 017. Physical Culture and Sports; 014 Secondary Education (Physical Culture) (reduced period of study); 017 Physical Culture and Sports (reduced period of study), field of expertise: 01 Education / Pedagogy.Teaching fundamental and professionally-oriented disciplines at the Department of Physical Education Theory and Methodology is carried out sufficiently in the completed teaching staff. Among them there are associate professors, candidate of sciences: Grabovsky Y., Gorodynska I., Pryshva O., Koval V., Kolcova O., Stepaniuk S., Hluhov I., Rudenko V., Balkovy I.
The main scientific and methodological work directions of the Department are related to the problems of the preparation of the future teacher, who should be aware of the pedagogical technologies of physical education of pupils. These problems are connected with impact physical activity on the human body development, education of pupils by means of physical culture and sports as well as selection of gifted young people.
To deal with these problems, on the base of the Department there was created the research laboratory of medical and biological basis of physical education and sports (head of the laboratory is Associate Professor Romaskevich U.O). The main preparation of the specialists is accomplished at the practical and laboratory lessons as well as during the hands-on training and touristic expeditions. According to the results of conducted researches, future specialists carry out term, diploma and master`s papers as well as theses for the degree of Candidate of Sciences. The results of research papers are told by teachers and students at the scientific and practical international, All-Ukrainian or university conferences.
The Department is constantly taking care of improving the scientific and methodology conditions of faculty`s teachers and students. Since January 2003 the scientific and methodology cabinet operates for this purpose (the head of the cabinet is Khokhlova Marina), which has about 3800 copies of scientific and methodological literature (more than 200 are prepared by the teachers of the Department), 25 periodicals, samples of writing term and diploma papers, samples of reports on pedagogical practice. Much attention is paid to the research work of students, undergraduates ad pupils of lyceum at the Kherson State University. Every year the students participate at the All-Ukrainian student Olympiads in physical education and physical rehabilitation, where they take prizes. The Department created a branch of the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: "Valeology. Physical culture".The teachers of the Department help to organize and hold the scientific practical conferences and seminars too. Well, since September 2003 the traditional All-Ukrainian scientific practical conference "Relevant problems of youth sports" is hold. The conference participants discuss relevant problems, perspectives of the youth sports development in different regions of Ukraine and problems connected with educational and training process at the children and youth sports schools, physical education colleges and other sports institutions; problems connected with nutrition and recovery of athletes after injuries in the preparatory and after competitive periods of the annual training cycle; problems connected with providing sports equipment and participation of young people in competitions of different levels. More than 200 persons take part in the conference including such leading scientists as professors Volkov L.V., Sergienko L.P., Viskovatova T.P., Smulsky V.L., Rovny A.S etc.To prepare students qualitatively and to hold the practical training (it is supervised by the Department), agreements were signed with schools of Kherson city and its region, where students go for job practice. To do the practical training agreements were signed with out-of-school educational institutions. Among them are Higher College of Physical Culture, comprehensive schools №24, №27, №30, №48, №52, №53, № 55, gymnasium №3, № 5, № 6, school of humanitarian work, children and youth sports schools of Kherson, Golopristan comprehensive school № 1, practical training of students is also carried out at the school for pupils with scoliosis, etc.
