Toward a Syndicated Ontology of Time for the Semantic Web

 Vadim Ermolayev

Time, as a phenomenon, has been in the focus of scientific thought from ancient times. It continues to be an important subject of research in many disciplines due to its importance as a basic aspect for understanding and formally representing change. Despite the recognition of importance, it has not been fully researched if the formal representations of time developed to date suffice to the needs of the fundamental and applied research in Computer Science, and in particular within the Semantic Web community.

The talk will demonstrate what has been done to analyze if the existing basic theories, models, and implemented ontologies of time cower the needs well. We extracted and appropriately structured the set of the features of time using the paper collection of the TIME Symposia series as the document corpus. This feature set helped structure the comparative review and analysis of the most prominent temporal theories. As a result, the selection of the subset of the features of time has been made, reflecting the TIME community opinion.

Further, the talk will report on our review of the available ontologies of time. We looked if the required features are covered by these ontologies. The results revealed that the reviewed ontologies taken together do not satisfactorily fully cover some important features: (i) density; (ii) relaxed linearity; (iii) scale factors; (iv) proper and periodic subintervals; (v) temporal measures and clocks.

Based on this requirements analysis, the development of a harmonized ontology for time representation and reasoning has been started. In its final part, the talk will present some results of this knowledge engineering effort which we internally call a “Syndicated Ontology of Time”.

 Speaker:

Vadim Ermolayev visits KIT in frame of the Marie Curie IRSES project SemData. He is an associate professor at the Department of Information Technologies (IT) ofZaporizhzhyaNationalUniversity and the lead of the Intelligent Systems Research Group. Apart of his academic work, he also a consultant for industries and public sector in Knowledge Engineering and Management, Semantic Technologies, Intelligent Software Systems, Distributed Artificial Intelligence. A particular research topic that Vadim focuses on throughout his research career is capturing the dynamics and adaptability of real world in intelligent software artifacts. The projects he took part in were focused on: intelligent systems and knowledge representation for enterprises; business and informal process dynamics; intelligent distributed information retrieval; the confluence of agent-based systems and Semantic Web services; ontology engineering and management with a focus on evolution and refinement; performance management in engineering design.
