KSU Team Joined the Training within the DigiUni Project

Members of Kherson State University continue to attend training workshops under the Erasmus+ project “Digital University - Open Ukrainian Initiative” - DigiUni. On July 21-25, the fourth training is taking place at the Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) and the Technical Information Library (TIB) in Hannover, Germany, bringing together more than 40 representatives from 10 Ukrainian partner universities, the Ministry of Education and Science, and the Ukrainian Association of IT Professionals.

Kherson State University is represented at the training by Vice-Rector Maksym Vinnyk, Professor Vitalii Kobets, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law Kateryna Melnykova, and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Culture and Arts Natalia Tereshenko.

On the first day, the participants got acquainted and networked, and on Monday, lectures and workshops began. The first day was dedicated to open science and educational resources. Professor Sören Auer, Director of the Technical Information Library (TIB), presented the largest technical library in Germany, which employs 600 specialists from more than 30 countries, including Ukraine. The library has 9.9 million printed and electronic media items and 6200 subscription journals. Prof. Auer presented a revolutionary approach of the cognitive knowledge graph, which overcomes the problem of the “black box” of neural networks and makes the results transparent and easy to interpret. This approach became the basis of the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG) service, which allows to get answers to research questions by processing 76 million articles.

The next open educational resource introduced to the training participants was the eDoer service, a free, high-quality, versatile and easy-to-use tool for creating courses using AI recommendations.

Sven Stobel, product owner of the TIB AV portal, presented a platform that provides open access to more than 45,000 scientific videos. This platform allows posting scientific video content that receives a DOI, which makes it possible to cite it in scientific publications and educational resources. The videos are available in different languages, including Ukrainian, which makes them even more valuable for our audience.

The Twillo platform, a portal of open educational resources (OER) for teaching at universities, and the OERSI search engine, which contains more than 85,000 results in 9 languages, were also presented. These resources are available for expansion on GitHub, which allows anyone to create new open access educational materials.

The first day of the workshop demonstrated the best practices of using open electronic educational resources for the development of educational potential and research in Ukrainian universities. Kherson State University is actively implementing its own digital learning environments and open educational resources for participants in the educational process, introducing the best practices of EU partner universities within the ERASMUS+ program.

The program will continue with presentations, introductions to digital platforms and resources that allow for the provision and administration of the educational process. The Academy of Artificial Intelligence and an overview of video learning research will also be presented. Some days will be devoted to additional education and inclusion in education, as well as inter-university digital initiatives at the federal level.

KSU representatives expressed their gratitude to the team of the Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) and the Technical Information Library (TIB) for the opportunity to learn about the best digital practices in order to realize them in Ukraine.
