Tuesday, April 29, 2025

The event was attended by the editorial team of the publication, reviewers, scientists, applicants and everyone who was interested in this project. The authors of the guide are Kherson historians, geographers and local historians Bilyi Dementiy, Serhiy Dyachenko, Vadym Yarovyi, as well as scientists from Kherson State University - Mykola Homanyuk, Natalia Kuzovova, Oleksiy Makiyenko.
During the meeting, they talked about the results of the renaming in Kherson, the future of Kherson toponymy and toponymic research. Dean of the Faculty of Psychology, History and Sociology Iryna Shaposhnikova, who is a member of the renaming commission, noted the importance of this publication. She also noted that the commission worked during the Russian occupation of Kherson.

The publication consists of three sections. The first contains a list of old and new names that were renamed as part of the decolonization process in 2023–2024. The second section covers information and reference materials on all new names. The third section contains a current list of geonyms of the Kherson urban community.
Bily Dementiy spoke about the features of the publication and work on the directory, and also focused on renamings in the Kherson community in different years. And Natalia Kuzovova analyzed gender equality in toponyms. Currently, only 6.7% of streets in Kherson are named after women. In addition, there is a tendency to increase the number of streets whose names are impersonal.
