BURN Project on Life’s Essentials: Support, Care, and Humanity

The final meeting in a series of sessions under international projects implemented by Kherson State University took place, focusing on the BURN Project (Boosting University Psychological Resilience and Wellbeing in (Post-) War Ukrainian Nation) under the Erasmus+ program.

The meeting was attended by KSU Rector Oleksandr Spivakovskiy, vice-rectors, representatives of the International Relations Department led by Yevheniia Revenko, and the project implementation team from KSU. The session was moderated by Vice-Rector for International, Social and Humanitarian, Research and Education Affairs Veronika Denysenko.

As reported by the KSU project coordinator, Professor Ihor Popovych, the project is being successfully implemented and already shows tangible results. A Center for Psychological Resilience and Wellbeing has been opened at the Ivano-Frankivsk office. Notably, KSU has outpaced its partners in the project, establishing a sustainable operation schedule for the Center, including regular trainings and meetings.

Educational components have been implemented across all three academic levels, covering various areas of psychology, including conflict resolution, work with refugees and war-affected individuals, and trauma care. At the second and third levels, instruction is conducted in English.

The BURN Project platform has also become a starting point for students who develop and conduct their own trainings, not only for members of the KSU community but also for students from other higher education institutions.

The next steps include activities at faculties during in-person learning weeks, as well as the development and launch of two trainings focused on:

  1. Developing sensitivity when communicating with students affected by the war.
  2. Fundamentals of a trauma-informed approach.

Rector Oleksandr Spivakovskiy noted:

“I sincerely thank the project team and coordinator Ihor Popovych for implementing such an important direction in the university’s work as psychological support. This project is about the most important things in life — support, help, and humanity.”
