Since the nineties of the twentieth century, the scientific school of Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine Maria Ivanovna Pentiliuk has been actively operating at Kherson State University.

Members of the school research theoretical and methodological issues of linguodidactics.

The general areas of research of the school's members are topical issues of modern school and university linguodidactics, including the methodology of science, standardization of education at different levels, approaches, methods, techniques and means of modern language education; linguistic features of pupils, students, and undergraduates; speech development, communicative competence of the individual; problems of language teaching in educational institutions of different accreditation levels and different types of secondary schools; methods of teaching different sections of the school curriculum and different linguistic disciplines.

The researchers focus on the psychological and psycholinguistic foundations of language teaching, forms and technologies of the educational process.

The main research programs of the scientists are focused on the following principles:

-The Ukrainian language in all types of secondary and higher education institutions is a means of forming and developing a linguistic personality, a nationally conscious citizen of Ukraine;

-Teaching the Ukrainian language is aimed at fostering a linguistic personality of a person who loves, knows and cherishes the Ukrainian language, respects it as the language of our state, knows its expressive means, uses it in his/her professional activity and in everyday life;

-The formation and development of the individual is carried out in the process of mastering all types of speech activity - speaking, listening, reading and writing; perception and production of speech;

-Language education is enriched through the use of effective traditional and innovative technologies;

The members of the school maintain close ties with the Institute of Pedagogy of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, the Drahomanov National Pedagogical University of Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Kryvyi Rih, and other universities.

This cooperation resulted in collective works (textbooks, monographs) and scientific conferences.

For example, under the editorship of M. I. Pentiliuk, the team of authors prepared and published the textbooks "Methods of Teaching the Ukrainian Language in Secondary Educational Institutions" (Kyiv: Lenvit, 2000, 2005, 2009), "Workshop on Methods of Teaching the Ukrainian Language" (Kyiv: Lenvit, 2003, 2011), "Dictionary of Ukrainian Linguodidactics" (2015), a series of textbooks "Ukrainian Language" for secondary school students (grades 5-9, grades 10-11), and many others.

M. Pentiliuk's scientific work includes more than 400 scientific papers, including 26 textbooks (for secondary schools, teacher training schools and higher education institutions, in particular, the textbook "Ukrainian Language" for teacher training schools has gone through 3 editions), 6 monographs (3 collective), 18 textbooks for teachers and students, 17 programs for universities and secondary schools, dozens of articles in central journals, etc.

The main problem of the research of the scientific school in recent decades is the peculiarities of teaching the Ukrainian language in Ukrainian educational institutions in the light of the concepts and the Standard of Language Education.

On the basis of the school, research is organized for postgraduate and doctoral students who study advanced pedagogical experience (publications about it appear in methodological journals), conduct experimental work in schools and higher education institutions in Kherson, Mykolaiv, Cherkasy regions, Berdiansk, Uman, Kharkiv, etc.

Since its inception, the school has defended 8 doctoral and 28 PhD theses. The results obtained are of great practical importance. They affect the quality of training of language teachers and students, both philologists and non-philologists.

Textbooks and manuals are important for the education of highly cultured citizens of Ukraine and the formation of national-speaking personalities.

 The scientific works of the School's members help to implement the concepts and the Standard of Language Education in Ukraine, to implement the main ideas of the New Ukrainian School, curricula for secondary and higher education institutions, and to use interactive forms of work and new technologies.

Students of full-time and part-time higher education are also involved in the development of the School's research issues.

This cooperation has resulted in the successful defense of dozens of master's theses and diploma projects.

In 2001, on the initiative of M. Pentiliuk, the Scientific Laboratory "Technology of Teaching the State Language in Educational Institutions of the South-Eastern Region of Ukraine" functioned for many years on the basis of the Scientific School. Famous Ukrainian linguists were involved in the laboratory: S. Karaman, O. Horoshkina, A. Nikitina, I. Vasylkova, L. Ruskulis, N. Borodina, Z. Bakum, I. Drozdova, and others, which significantly expands the scope of the school's activities.

On the basis of the laboratory, a temporary creative team was repeatedly created, which worked fruitfully on the scientific problem "Technology of teaching the state language in educational institutions of the southeastern region of Ukraine", approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The scientific interests of the members of the scientific school are closely related to the education of not only higher education students but also adults.

Scientists are involved in the professional development of language teachers: they give lectures at courses and seminars for teachers.
