From March 27 to 29, 2023, the international conference "Experiences of Violence and Notions of Temporality in Jewish History" was held at Universität Hamburg, in which Natalya Kuzovova, head of the department of history, archeology and teaching methods, took part, with a report "Life and Death, Violence and Temporality – A Preliminary Reading of Photographs from the Tcherikower Collection Showing Pogrom Victims and Pogromists" (together with Prof. Dr. Monica Rüthers)

Thursday, March 30, 2023

The organizers of the conference were Universität Hamburg and Helmut-Schmidt-Universität. The focus was on the temporal dimension of practices and experiences of anti-Jewish violence in European history. An interdisciplinary approach allowed for consideration of survival practices, commemoration, and temporal markers of the experience of violence from antiquity to the present. Researchers from Canada, the USA, France, Germany, and Israel took part in the conference.

Natalya Kuzovova joined the research group "Gewalt-Zeiten. Temporalitäten von Gewaltunternehmungen“ as a visiting researcher in 2022. Turning to the dramatic and terrifying events of the anti-Jewish pogroms depicted in Cherikover's photo collection (1919), the researcher also highlighted the practices of violence and crimes of the Russian army against the civilian population during the attack on Kyiv in February-March and early April 2022.
