Main Stages of the Formation and Development of KSU 

1917-1944


October 1917 – Evacuation of Yuryivsk Teacher's Institute  from the Baltic region to Kherson.

November 14, 1917 – Start of classes at Yuryivsk Teacher's Institute  in Kherson.

September 1, 1918 – Legal recognition of Yuryivsk Teacher's Institute  as a Ukrainian educational institution.

July 2, 1919 – Yuryivsk Teacher's Institute  reorganized into Kherson Pedagogical Institute with a four-year study program.

1919 – Establishment of the Pedagogical Institute Council and the Student Council.


 

September 1919 – February 1920 – The Pedagogical Institute temporarily ceased operations due to the Civil War.
March 2, 1920 – The activities of the Kherson Pedagogical Institute were resumed.
August 1920 – The institute was granted the building, property, and educational equipment of the Commercial School, as well as the premises of the Second Male Gymnasium.
1921 – The Kherson Pedagogical Institute was renamed the Kherson Institute of Public Education (KhIPE) with two faculties: Vocational Education and Social Education.
May 1922 – The institute was given the building of the First Male Gymnasium.
August 1922 – KhIPE moved into the premises of the Second Female Mariinsky-Alexandrovsky Gymnasium.
1922 – Three-year preparatory courses were opened at KhIPE.
1922–1923 academic year – Transition to a lecture-seminar system of education.
1923 – The preparatory courses were transformed into a workers' faculty.
1924 – The premises of the Pushkin School were allocated to KhIPE, and two student dormitories were provided.
1924 – The Administration Board was established to oversee KhIPE.
1924 – The trade union and Komsomol organizations of KhIPE were founded.
October 24, 1924 – KhIPE was named after N.K. Krupskaya.
1925 – The first graduation of the experimental seven-year school at KhIPE took place.
November 17, 1925 – The People's Commissar of Education of the Ukrainian SSR, O. Shumsky, visited KhIPE.
1925–1926 academic year – The Dalton Plan was introduced, incorporating the laboratory-research method of learning.
1925–1926 – The first editions of Notes of the Kherson Institute of Public Education named after N.K. Krupskaya were published in two parts.
1926 – The Pedagogical Museum was established at KhIPE.
1927 – A commemorative collection of works by the faculty of the Department of Pedagogy, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the death of J. Pestalozzi, was published.
1930 – KhIPE was transformed into a three-year Institute of Social Education.


1930 – Introduction of distance learning.

1930 – Publication of the mass-circulation newspaper "For Cadres".

August 1933 – Kherson Institute of Social Education named after N.K. Krupskaya was renamed Kherson Pedagogical Institute named after N.K. Krupskaya.

June 1935 – The institute received the status of Kherson State Pedagogical Institute named after N.K. Krupskaya.

July 1935 – Closure of the History Faculty and the Faculty of Language and Literature.

1936 – Establishment of the Zoological Museum, Agro-Biological Station, and Botanical Garden at KHDPI.

1936–1937 academic year – Opening of the Geography Faculty and the Evening Teachers' Institute.

1938–1939 academic year – Opening of the Faculty of Language and Literature with Russian and Ukrainian departments.

1939 – A Workers' Faculty was opened at KhSPI.

1939 – Construction of an astronomical pavilion-observatory.

1939–1940 academic year – Socialist competition named after the Third Stalin Five-Year Plan with Mykolaiv Pedagogical Institute.

1940 – All-Union Scientific Conference on the Ukrainian Language was held at KhSPI.

1940 – Publication of "Scientific Notes of KhSPI named after N.K. Krupskaya", Issue No. 1.

August 19, 1941 – March 13, 1944 – The activities of KhSPI named after N.K. Krupskaya were interrupted due to the Nazi occupation of Kherson.


 

Kherson State University During World War II 

From August 1941 to March 1944, the Kherson State Pedagogical Institute named after N.K. Krupskaya ceased its activities. Most students and faculty members heroically fought on the frontlines of the war. Among them was Mykhailo Moskalenko, a third-year student of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, who voluntarily applied to the military commissariat. He graduated from the Krasnodar Officers' School in March 1942, received the rank of lieutenant, and as the best graduate, was assigned to the 109th Guards Rifle Division as a mortar platoon commander. Mykhailo received his first combat award—the Medal "For Courage"—for battles during the liberation of the Caucasus. In September 1943, during the liberation of Melitopol, Mykhailo Moskalenko heroically perished. By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated November 1, 1943, Guards Lieutenant M.I. Moskalenko was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

Several institute faculty members also perished heroically:

During World War II, the Kherson State Pedagogical Institute lost all material and educational equipment, including specialized classrooms, laboratories, an observatory, a library with a 100,000-volume collection, a cafeteria, designated apartments for faculty members, and two dormitories. The main building was turned into a stable. The total damage inflicted on the institute amounted to 12,704,721 karbovanets (according to the financial report of the institute for 1944).


 

           

    1944-1960

 

 

March 20, 1944 – The work of KhSPI named after N.K. Krupskaya was resumed (5 faculties, correspondence department).

September 1944 – A teacher training institute was opened (3 departments).

1945 – Departments of Ukrainian and Russian language and literature were opened at the teacher training institute.

1945-1946 academic year – A correspondence teacher training institute was opened.

January 9, 1945 – The Academic Council of KhSPI resumed its work.

1948 – The first post-war issue of Scientific Notes of KhSPI named after N.K. Krupskaya was published.

1949 – A student scientific society was established.

September 1, 1950 – The geography and history faculties were closed.


 


1955 – A greenhouse and an animal husbandry facility were established at the Natural Sciences Faculty.

1956-1957 academic year – Training of teachers with a broad specialization began.

1958 – A new observatory was opened at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics.

1959 – A water station was opened on the banks of the Dnipro River.


 


1960 - 1980 

1960 – A handball team was created at KhSPI.

1960 – The men's ensemble Beryozka was established.

1961 – A School of Young Mathematicians was created.

1962 – A General Science Faculty was opened at KhSPI (3 departments). 

1963-1965 – The first institute-designed teaching devices, including the Shkolyar learning machine, were constructed.

1964 – A research laboratory for high-temperature semiconductors and special alloys was opened at the Department of Physics.

1964 – The Faculty of Public Professions was established.

1965 – Eight-month preparatory courses for admission to KhSPI were organized.

1965 – The Faculty of Language and Literature was reorganized into the Philological Faculty with Ukrainian and Russian departments.

1965-1966 academic year – The course Technical means of teaching was introduced in all faculties.

1966 – Academic councils of faculties were established.

1966 – A department for training teachers of Russian language and literature for the Uzbek SSR and the Karakalpak Autonomous Republic was opened at the Philological Faculty.

1967 – The Young Scientists' Council was created.

1967 – For the first time, student scientific works were submitted to a republican competition.

1967 – The Art Council of KSPI was established.

1967 KhSPI was awarded an Honorary Certificate by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR.

1967 – A new student dormitory was opened.

1969 – A republican scientific and practical conference was held, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of N.K. Krupskaya’s birth.

1970 – A School of Young Educators was opened.

1972 – A research sector was established at KhSPI.

1973 – A general technical faculty was opened.

1973 – A preparatory department was established.

1975 – The KSPI Scientific and Technical Information Service was created.

1977 – A Faculty of Pedagogy was established.

November 24, 1978 – The new main building of KhSPI named after N.K. Krupskaya was opened.



   1980-2000 

1980 – A new dormitory No. 3 was opened.

1986 – The Institute Council on New Information Technologies in Education was established.

1986 – The Faculty of Foreign Languages was opened.

1989 – The building of the Philological Faculty was opened.

1990 – An experiment on implementing the concept of continuous pedagogical education began.

September 17, 1991 – The preparatory department was reorganized into the Faculty of Pre-University Training.

1991 – An inter-university research laboratory for aesthetic education under the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine was established.

1991 – A laboratory for studying the regional historical and cultural identity of Southern Ukraine was created.

1991 – The Southern Ukrainian Educational and Methodological Regional Center Pilot Schools was founded.

1992 - 3 new faculties were created on the basis of the Faculty of Philology: additional pedagogical specialities and retraining, Ukrainian philology and foreign philology

1992 – A postgraduate program was opened at KhSPI.

November 1993 – The Suziria dance ensemble was established.

1994 – The Faculty of Physical Education and Sports was opened.

1994 – The Academic Lyceum at KhSPI was established.

1994 – The last graduation of students from the Uzbek Department took place.

1995 – The Faculty of History and Law was opened.

1996 – The Faculty of Additional Pedagogical Specialties and Professional Development was reorganized into the Faculty of Law.

1996 – The Faculty of Pre-University Training was reorganized into the Center for Pre-University Training of KSPI.

1998 – The Faculty of Art and Pedagogy was opened.

1998 – The Faculty of History and Law was reorganized into the Faculty of History.

1998 – The Faculty of Foreign Philology was reorganized into the Faculty of Foreign Languages.

May 25, 1998 – By Resolution No. 744 dated May 25,1998 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Kherson State Pedagogical Institute was reorganized into Kherson State Pedagogical University (KSPU).

October 1998 – The first issue of the Kafedra newspaper of KSPU and the Academic Lyceum was published.

November 1998 – The student educational theater Studio-Art was established.

September 1999 – A public legal consultation service was created.

1999 – The Department of International Relations was established at KSPU.

1999 – The Faculty of Retraining and Advanced Training of Personnel was opened.

1999 – The Faculty of Law was reorganized into the Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences.


 2000-2007 

2000 – A symphony orchestra was founded at KSPU

September 2000 – The Center for Spanish Language and Culture was opened.

2001 – The Faculty of Social and Legal Studies was reorganized into the Faculty of Economics and Law.

2001 – The publishing house of Kherson State Pedagogical University (KSPU) was established.

January 25, 2002 – The student theater "Studio-Art" was awarded the title of "People's Art Collective."

March 2002 – Visit of the President of Ukraine L.D. Kuchma to the university.

May 2002 – A specialized academic council K.67.053.01 was established for the defense of Ph.D. dissertations in three pedagogical specializations:

13.00.02 – Theory and Methods of Teaching (Ukrainian Language);

13.00.02 – Theory and Methods of Teaching (Russian Language);

13.00.07 – Theory and Methods of Education.

September 2002 – The University History Museum was opened.

October 31, 2002 – The History Museum of KSU was awarded the title of "People's Museum."

November 16, 2002 – By order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 641-r dated November 16,.2002, Kherson State Pedagogical University was reorganized into Kherson State University.

2002 – The Center for Polish Language and Culture was opened.

2002 – The Information and Training Center for Land Management was established.

2003 – The Faculty of Psychological and Natural Sciences was reorganized into the Institute of Natural Sciences.

2003 – The Faculty of Foreign Philology was reorganized into the Institute of Foreign Philology.

2003 – The Faculty of Engineering and Pedagogy was reorganized into the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.

2003 – The information-methodological journal "Printed Word" was published by the KSU publishing house.

2003 – The Faculty of Social and Psychological Studies was opened.

November 2003 – The Center for Turkish Language and Culture was opened.

2003 – The Faculty of Economics and Law was reorganized into the Faculty of Economics and Jurisprudence.

2003 – The Faculty of Arts and Pedagogy was reorganized into the Faculty of Culture and Arts.

2003 – The Faculty of Primary Education was reorganized into the Faculty of Preschool and Primary Education.

2003 – The Faculty of Ukrainian Philology was reorganized into the Faculty of Philology and Journalism.

2003 – Two autonomous gas boiler houses were launched.

2004 – A new student changing room was opened.

2004 – A specialized academic council K 67.053.02 was established for the defense of Ph.D. dissertations in Philological Sciences (specialty 10.01.02 – Russian Literature).

2004 – The Institute of Psychology, History, and Sociology was created based on the Social-Psychological and Historical Faculties.

2004 – The Research Institute of Information Technologies was established.

2005 – The scientific journal "Black Sea Botanical Journal" was published.

April 2005 – The Center for Small Business Development started operations.

June 13, 2005 – The History Museum of KSU was awarded the title of "Exemplary Museum."

2005 – The Faculty of Philology and Journalism was reorganized into the Institute of Philology and Journalism.

November 2005 – The Ukrainian Cultural Center was opened.

November 25, 2005 – Visit of the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, S.M. Nikolayenko, to the university.

January 2006 – The first issue of the newspaper University Panorama was published.

2007-2017 

November 12, 2007 – The first organizational congress of KSU graduates was held.

November 13, 2007 – A commemorative sign was unveiled in honor of professors and leading lecturers of the 20th century.

November 14, 2007 – The Museum of Scientific Collections was opened.

November 14, 2007 – An exhibition hall was opened.

April 9, 2008 – A specialized academic council K 67.051.02 was established for the specialty 13.00.02 – Theory and Methods of Teaching (Mathematics).

April 10, 2008 – A specialized academic council K 67.051.01 was opened for the specialties 03.00.04 – Biochemistry and 03.00.13 – Human and Animal Physiology.

July 14, 2008 – A specialized academic council D 67.051.03 was opened for the defense of doctoral dissertations in the specialties:

13.00.02 – Theory and Methods of Teaching (Ukrainian Language),

13.00.02 – Theory and Methods of Teaching (Russian Language).

2008 – The Pre-University Training Center was transformed into the Center for Specialized Training and Test Technologies.

October 19, 2009 – The Friedrich Fröbel Educational Center was opened.

October 20, 2009 – A specialized academic council K 67.051.05 was opened for the defense of Ph.D. dissertations in the specialty 10.02.04 – Germanic Languages.

2010 – A license was obtained for training foreign students.

2010 – A specialized academic council K 67.051.02 was established for the specialty 13.00.04 – Theory and Methods of Vocational Education.

May 22, 2010 – The European Union Information Center was opened.

December 2010 – The Center for Training Foreign Citizens was opened.

March 21, 2011 – The Israeli Cultural Center was opened.

September 1, 2011 – The Press Center of KSU was established.

September 2011 – The Faculty of Economics and Law was divided into two separate faculties:

The Faculty of Law,

The Faculty of Economics and Management.

September 2011 – The Faculty of Engineering and Technology was renamed the Faculty of Technologies and Service Sector.

September 26, 2011 – The Museum and Archive Center of KSU was established.

November 1, 2011 – The Department of Tourism was created.

November 3, 2011 – The Institute of Natural Sciences was reorganized into two faculties:

The Faculty of Biology, Geography, and Ecology,

The Faculty of Natural Sciences, Human Health, and Tourism.

November 3, 2011 – The Institute of Foreign Philology was reorganized into two faculties:

The Faculty of Foreign Philology,

The Faculty of Translation Studies.

November 3, 2011 – The Institute of Psychology, History, and Sociology was renamed the Faculty of Psychology, History, and Sociology.

October 2012 – The Zoological Museum of KSU was renovated.

May 1, 2013 – A specialized academic council K 67.051.05 was opened for the defense of Ph.D. dissertations in the specialty 10.02.16 – Translation Studies.

September 2013 – The Faculty of Pre-University Training was renamed the Center for Pre-University Training.

November 14, 2013 – The Bulgarian Cultural Center named after Saints Cyril and Methodius was opened.

2013 – Agreements on double degree programs were signed between KSU and the University of Economics (Bydgoszcz, Poland).

December 2013 – The first issue of the renewed University Panorama newspaper was published.

February 13, 2014 – An additional agreement No. 2 was signed on the implementation of a double degree program between KSU and Pomeranian Academy (Słupsk, Poland).

2014 – The institutional repository eKhSUIR of KSU was created.

April 3, 2014 – A commemorative plaque was unveiled in honor of O. Honchar.

April 28, 2014 – The Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, S.M. Kvit, visited KSU.

August 7, 2014 – A master’s program in "Educational Institution Management" was opened.

August 29, 2014 – The Research and Practical Center for the Correction, Rehabilitation, and Development of Children and Youth was established at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Human Health, and Tourism.

September 5, 2014 – The Psychological Service was reorganized into the Social-Psychological Service.

October 28, 2014 – The KSU Natural Science Educational and Research Station was established at the "Burevisnyk" Recreation Center.

October 17, 2014 – A new gym was opened.

2015 – By decision of the Academic Council, the university library was granted the status of a Scientific Library.

February 16, 2015 – A memorial plaque was unveiled in honor of R. Storcheus.

2015 – The university extended its license for training foreign students.

July 1, 2016 – The Univer café-pizzeria was opened.

September 2016 – The Center for Pre-University Training was reorganized into the Center for Pre-University Training and Work with Foreign Students.


 

2017-2020 

 

February 1, 2017 – The Faculty of Translation Studies and the Faculty of Foreign Philology were merged into the Faculty of Foreign Philology.

February 8, 2017 – The first double diplomas were awarded to 9 graduates of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports.

March 2017 – The Department of Infrastructure Development and Technology Transfer was reorganized into the Information and Computing Center.

March 10, 2017 – The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine issued Resolution No. 133 dated March 10,2017 "On the Establishment of Military Training Units at Higher Educational Institutions and Amendments to the Appendix to the Procedure for Conducting Military Training of Ukrainian Citizens under the Reserve Officer Training Program," which initiated the establishment of a military department at KSU.

May 12, 2017 – A Jubilee Academy dedicated to the 100th anniversary of KSU was held at the Pedagogical Museum of Ukraine (Kyiv City Teacher’s House).

June 2017 – The electronic journal Tourism and Local History was founded.

October 11, 2017 – A new sports field for game sports was opened.

October 24, 2017 – A commemorative coin "100 Years of Kherson State University" was issued by the National Bank of Ukraine (made of nickel silver, nominal value of 2 hryvnias, circulation of 30,000).

November 14, 2017 – A Time Capsule was placed.


 

November 22, 2017 – First Lady of Ukraine, Maryna Poroshenko, visited KSU.

December 22, 2017 – Two robotics laboratories were opened at the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Informatics and the Faculty of Preschool and Primary Education.

January 15, 2018 – The Department of Pedagogy, Psychology, and Educational Management was named after Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Ye. Petukhov.

February 15, 2018 – Elections for the Rector of KSU were held. Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Oleksandr Spivakovskiy, was elected as Rector.

March 27, 2018 – Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, Ihor Zhdanov, visited the university.

March 27, 2018 – A roundtable discussion "Discussion on the Draft Concept for the Development of Teacher Education" was held with the participation of the General Director of the Directorate of Higher and Adult Education, Oleh Sharov.

April 25, 2018 – The All-Ukrainian Educational Forum "New Ukrainian School – Dialogue with V.O. Sukhomlynsky" was held.

April 25, 2018 – The Department of Physical Therapy and Human Health was reorganized into the Department of Medicine and Physical Therapy.

May 15, 2018 – Kherson State University received a license to train specialists at the second (master’s) level of higher education in specialty 222 Medicine, with a licensed training capacity of 150 students (Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine No. 666-l dated May 15, 2018 "On Licensing Educational Activities").

June 8, 2018 – Oleksandr Spivakovskiy, Doctor of Pedagogy, Professor, was officially appointed as Rector of KSU (Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine No. 246-k dated June 08, 2018).

June 27, 2018 – The Faculty of Philology and Journalism was renamed the Faculty of Ukrainian Philology and Journalism.

June 27, 2018 – The Faculty of Preschool and Primary Education was renamed the Pedagogical Faculty.

June 27, 2018 – The Faculty of Law was renamed the Faculty of History and Law.

June 27, 2018 – The Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Informatics was renamed the Faculty of Computer Science, Physics, and Mathematics.

July 17, 2018 – The Chemistry and Educational Technologies Laboratory and the Physics and Educational Technologies Laboratory were opened.

August 31, 2018 – The development strategy of KSU for 2018–2023 was approved.

September 1, 2018 – A dining hall was opened in Academic Building No. 5.

September 28, 2018 – The Faculty of Technologies and Service Sector ceased operations.

September 28, 2018 – The General University Department of Language Education ceased operations.

October 6, 2018 – The School of Young Physicists, Mathematicians, and Computer Scientists began its activities.


 

November 10, 2018 – The "School of Young Psychologists" was launched.

November 29, 2018 – The university's sports halls were reopened after reconstruction.

November 29, 2018 – The Third Generation University was established.

December 12, 2018 – The first regional robotics festival and the "Robotrafik" tournament were held.

December 27, 2018 – Berislav Pedagogical College named after V. Benkovskyi and Henichesk Medical School were joined to KSU (by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 1091-r dated December 27, 2018).

January 8, 2019 – The "Chess Academy" was opened at KSU.

February 18-20, 2019 – Presentation of the government bill "On Professional Pre-Higher Education" with the participation of the People's Deputy of Ukraine Taras Kremin and the General Director of the Directorate of Higher and Adult Education Oleg Sharov.

February 18-20, 2019 – The All-Ukrainian interactive scientific-practical conference "Modern Problems of Preschool and Primary Education in the System of Social Transformational Processes" was held.

February 20, 2019 – The grand opening of the commemorative sign "Froebel Pyramid" as a symbol of unity and diversity of the world.


 

March 25, 2019 – Opening of a coworking center and a conference hall at the Scientific Library.

April 19, 2019 – Opening of the Primary Healthcare Medical Center.

June 4, 2019 – Official opening of the Inclusive Resource Center and Rehabilitation for Children with Special Educational Needs at the Pedagogical Faculty.

June 26, 2019 – The first certificates were awarded to students of the "Third Generation University."

July 1, 2019 – Opening of the 10th International School of Social Studies.

January 31, 2020 – A decision was made to establish the Raphael Lemkin Center for Genocide Studies at the Faculty of History and Law.

February 1, 2020 – The Sports Swimming School Championship was held with the support of the KSU rector.

February 11, 2020 – Visit to KSU by Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Yehor Stadnyi.

May 4, 2020 – The Ukrainian-Polish Studies Center at KSU was opened.

November 29, 2023 – Publication of the educational workbook “Ukrainian Language: Test Tasks for NMT/ZNO Preparation”, authored by lecturers of the Department of Ukrainian and Slavic Philology and Journalism. 

December 4, 2023 – Irina Pleshynets, a student of the Faculty of Culture and Arts, became a laureate of the VIII International Vocal and Choral Competition “Vokal-Art” in the “Academic Vocal” category.

December 13–17, 2023 – KSU delegation visited Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Poland) as part of the joint Erasmus+ SMART PL project.

December 19, 2023 – First founding meeting of the updated KSU Supervisory Board, whose composition was approved by the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi, on December 11, 2023.
