Beresh Alexander Mikhailovich

The memorial plaque to Oleksandr Beresh was installed based on the decision of the Academic Council of Kherson State University (protocol No. 3 dated September 27, 2021)


Oleksandr Beresh (October 12, 1977 – February 29, 2004). Silver and bronze medalist of the XXVII Olympic Games in Sydney (2000), world champion, multiple European champion, Honored Master of Sports in artistic gymnastics, graduate of Kherson State University (class of 2001).

Oleksandr was born on October 12, 1977, in Pervomaisk, Luhansk region, where he began training in artistic gymnastics at the specialized Youth Sports School of the Olympic Reserve under the regional council of the "Dynamo" sports society.

In 1988, he moved to Kherson, where he studied at a sports-focused boarding school affiliated with the Higher School of Physical Culture. He became a leader of the Kherson regional organization of the "Dynamo" sports society, joined Ukraine’s national gymnastics reserve, and at the age of 17, entered the main team. In 2000, Oleksandr Beresh became the absolute European champion. He studied at Kherson State University, graduating in 2001 with a master's degree.

Oleksandr Beresh was a member of the Ukrainian national artistic gymnastics team since 1995, the absolute champion of the World University Games (1999) and Europe (2000). He was a four-time world championship medalist and a multiple-time winner and medalist of World Cup stages and national tournaments.

At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Oleksandr Beresh won a silver and a bronze medal for the Ukrainian team. He was the captain of Ukraine’s men’s artistic gymnastics team and a candidate for participation in the XXVIII Summer Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. 

Tragically, he passed away in a car accident on February 29, 2004.

Since 2005, an annual artistic gymnastics tournament in memory of Oleksandr Beresh has been held in Kherson.
