The Department of Cultural Studies announces that the Kherson State University starts the enrollment of full-time and part-time courses of specialty "Cultural Studies" of the higher education degree of "Bachelor" and "Master". An additional specialization for graduates is the organization of cultural and leisure activities. Applicants with a previous Bachelor or Bachelor degree may enroll in the second year. In order to obtain a Master's Degree in Cultural Studies, persons with a Bachelor's, Master's or "Specialist" education level in another specialty may enroll.

The history of the Department of Cultural Studies begins on May 18, 1998, when the Faculty of Art Culture was founded. On April 1, 2000, it was reorganized into the Department of Theory and History of Ukrainian Culture. Since June 1, 2003 - Department of Ukrainian Culture and Theater Art. Since September 1, 2004 - Department of Theater Arts. After the reorganization of the department on October 6, 2006, the division was re-named Ukrainian Culture and Theater Art. Since September 1, 2009 the department has been called Cultural Studies. 

In September 2010, the department opened a new, modern, prestigious and promising specialty in the field of cultural activity - cultural, educational and organizational work - cultural studies.

According to the occupational classifier DK 003: 2010, graduates of CBA bachelor of specialty Culturology may hold the following positions:

  • organizer of children's out-of-school establishments;
  • exhibition manager;
  • manager of a club type establishment;
  • head of the studio;
  • head of amateur association (club of interests);
  • head of studio, team (by types of art and folk art);
  • the head of the hall;
  • teacher of secondary educational institution;
  • instructor of cultural and educational institution;
  • head of amateur group (by types of art);
  • supervisor (studios by kinds of art and art, amateur association, club of interests, etc.);
  • a guide;
  • organizer of cultural and leisure activities;
  • organizer of concerts and lectures.

Bachelor of Cultural Studies can work:

  • in exhibition and exhibition centers, museums;
  • in cultural and art institutions, publishing houses;
  • in departments of culture of state institutions;
  • in aesthetic education centers;
  • at state and commercial associations for the organization of show programs, including leisure activities on cruise ships;
  • on radio, television, and other media.

The teaching staff of the department is engaged in scientific and methodological, organizational and educational work and creative activity. To ensure a high level of teaching of professional disciplines, the members of the department develop and publish textbooks, methodical manuals and recommendations, scientific articles in collections and journals.

 The traditional for the department is holding of All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conferences (with international participation) "Actual problems of art education in the higher education system", "Foreign and Ukrainian culture: issues of history, theory, methodology" and scientific-practical seminar "Cultural and linguistic relations" ulcers as a way of forming national consciousness. "

  In September 1998, Study-Art theater was created by the department, which includes teachers, students of the faculty and students of the Kherson Academic Lyceum at KSU. On January 25, 2002, by the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Study-Art Theater (artistic director - Professor L. Limarenko) was awarded the honorary title "People's Artistic Collective", which was confirmed in 2017. The theater presents its performances on the stage of Kherson State University, Kherson Academic Puppet Theater, Kherson Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater and at the site of Kherson, Kyiv, Kerch, Tarkhankut, Odessa, Mykolayiv. The repertoire of the team is diverse. Performances of domestic, world, classical and contemporary playwrights have been embodied on the stage. The Study-Art team repeatedly won the Grand Prix At the international and all-Ukrainian theater festivals.

 

The staff of the Department of Cultural Studies maintains close relations with all departments of the University. Established professional and creative relations with the Kherson Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater, the Kherson Academic Puppet Theater, the Kherson School of Culture, the Academic Lyceum at the KSU, the Tavriy Lyceum of Arts, the Kherson House of Creative Arts, the Kherson City Department of Culture, Concert hall "Youth and Students' Palace" of the Kherson Regional Council and other cultural, educational institutions we.

    On April 25, 2025, the Department of Cultural Studies at Kherson State University held the XIII All-Ukrainian (with international participation) Scientific and Practical Conference 🎓 "Current Issues of Art Education in Higher Education." This year’s event brought together scholars from Ukraine, Germany, Switzerland, and Spain, who joined efforts to address the pressing challenges facing art education amid war and global transformations. 🕊️ The conference began with a tribute to those who lost their lives in the Russian-Ukrainian war — a symbolic video presentation that reminded everyone of the price of our freedom. 🎤 The opening speech was delivered by: ▪️ Serhii Omelchuk — First Vice-Rector of Kherson State University, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, and Honored Scientist and Technician of Ukraine. Greetings to the participants were extended by: ▪️ Nataliia Tereshchenko — Acting Dean of the Faculty of Culture and Arts at Kherson State University ▪️ Lidiia Lymarenko — Acting Head of the Department of Cultural Studies, Honored Worker of Culture of Ukraine 🔍 During the event, the following topics were discussed: ✅ the transformation of art education in times of war ✅ teachers’ readiness to face new educational challenges ✅ spiritual guidelines and cultural memory ✅ the experience of Ukrainian integration abroad ✅ the role of the media in preserving cultural heritage ✅ student initiatives and projects for Ukraine’s recovery 📸 The atmosphere was filled with professional exchange, warm meetings, and new ideas!     Awarding of the Presidential Scholarship of Ukraine for Young Writers and Artists
    in the fields of music, theatre, visual arts, choreography, variety and circus arts, and cinema

    Aliona Movchan, Head of the Literary and Dramaturgical Department of the Kherson Regional Academic Music and Drama Theatre named after Mykola Kulish,
    a first-year Master's student pursuing a degree in Cultural Studies (Specialty 034), has been awarded the Presidential Scholarship of Ukraine.

    At the Faculty of Culture and Arts of Kherson State University, an attestation of higher education applicants specializing in 034 Cultural Studies took place. In their qualification projects, master's students explored important cultural studies topics that have gained particular significance during the war. These included: the necessity of preserving and promoting cultural heritage through digital technologies; the impact of internet memes on youth culture; contemporary cinema as a means of mass propaganda in interethnic conflicts; the specificity of representing worldviews and human models in Ukrainian musical culture of the first quarter of the 21st century; profound changes in Ukrainian sociocultural and artistic spaces during Ukraine's Independence period; an analysis of the development of Ukrainian theater under modern military conflicts and its influence on civic consciousness and national identity; and an examination of Ukrainian animated cinema during the years of Independence as a revival of interest in national cultural heritage.
    The future specialists in the field of culture proposed specific solutions to the problems that have arisen during the war

    With the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the 7th International Multi-Genre Yard Competition-Festival "SPIVOGRAI" was held in Kropyvnytskyi from October 25 to 27, 2024.

    The goals of the competition-festival were as follows:

    Aimed at identifying and supporting talented youth.
    Establishing creative contacts, ensuring communication among teachers, leaders, art educators, performers, and creative teams.
    Preserving, developing, and enhancing the best artistic and performing traditions of national and world art.
    Fostering high spiritual and moral qualities in youth and forming an active life position for the future generation through various forms of artistic creativity.
    Aimed at supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine, peace, and territorial integrity.
    The jury of the competition-festival consisted of honored cultural and art figures, national artists, choreographers, artists, and faculty members of higher art education institutions from Ukraine, Poland, Canada, China, and Ireland.

    Students from Kherson State University also participated in this prestigious competition-festival.

    In the "Artistic and Creative Project" category, graduate students pursuing a second master's level degree, under the supervision of the distinguished educator, Honored Worker of Culture of Ukraine, Professor Lidia Lymarenko, received one Grand Prix diploma and thirteen first-degree diplomas:

    In the "Theatrical Art" category, undergraduate students in the "Cultural Studies" major, under the guidance of Professor Lidia Lymarenko, received one Grand Prix diploma and three first-degree diplomas:

    Pavlenko Mariya (1st year, Faculty of Culture and Arts), theatrical composition "The Ballad of Dragons" – Grand Prix diploma;
    Abramova Anna (1st year, Faculty of Culture and Arts), literary and musical composition "Moonlight Nocturne" – First Degree diploma;
    Shkolyarenko Yuliya (1st year, Faculty of Culture and Arts), theatrical composition "Once You Loved a Narcissist" – First Degree diploma;
