History of creation and directions of work of the Department of Psychology

         The Department of Psychology was founded in 1983. The need for the creation and existence of the Department of Psychology was determined by the professional specifics of the university (at that time Kherson State Pedagogical Institute named after NK Krupskaya) - is the training of specialists in creative work in the field of "man-man". The Department of Psychology provided the theoretical and practical basis for the pedagogical profession.

         Since 1990, the Department of Psychology has been training practical psychologists at the Faculty of Psychology and Natural Sciences of the University and since 1997 at the Faculty of Art and Pedagogy. In July 2003, by order of the Rector of Kherson State University, Professor Y.I.Belyaev a new socio-psychological faculty was established. From the 2004-2005 academic year, the Institute of Psychology, History and Sociology was established within Kherson State University, where the Department of Practical Psychology took a worthy place among other departments.

         In 2007, the Department of Practical Psychology included 15 full-time employees: 8 candidates of psychological sciences, associate professors and 7 teachers. Such professional growth became the basis for the reorganization of the department. Since September 1, 2007 there were two psychological departments: the Department of Practical Psychology (Head - Candidate of Psychological Sciences, Associate Professor NI Tavrovetskaya) and the Department of General and Social Psychology 

         In connection with the production expediency by the order of the Rector of Kherson State University Professor Alexander Spivakovsky (order from 04.12.20 № 1205-D) from February 15, 2021 the two departments are reunited into one Department of Psychology,. The staff of the Department of Psychology includes three doctors of psychological sciences, professors and seven candidates of psychological sciences, three of whom have the academic title of associate professor.

        Today, the Department of Psychology is part of the Faculty of Psychology, History and Sociology and trains applicants for higher education in the specialty 053 Psychology at all levels - bachelor's, master's, educational and scientific.

        It is a tradition to help young teachers by experienced colleagues , systematic scientific-professional and methodical growth of members of the department. Postgraduate studies are fruitful at the Department of Psychology. During the years of its operation, the department has defended almost 20 PhD theses. Today, our graduate students are also actively preparing to defend their research.

       The scientific staff of the department maintains strong long-term ties with many institutions of higher education, academic research institutions of Ukraine and other countries, including: Institute of Social and Political Psychology ; Institute of Psychology GS Kostyuk NAPS of Ukraine; Institute of Problems of Education of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences; Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv; Sumy State Pedagogical University named after AS Makarenko; VN Karazin Kharkiv National University, Chernihiv Collegium National University named after T.G. Shevchenko, Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno (Republic of Belarus); MP Drahomanov National Pedagogical University, Interregional Academy of Personnel Management, Pomeranian Academy (Slupsk, Republic of Poland), etc.
