The history of the Chemistry Department began in 1920, when the chemistry section was creating at the Physics Department.

Since 1941, the chemistry section has ceased activities at the same time as the institute. In March 1944, activity resumed as an independent department.

First Assistant Professor Associate Professor Platash I.T. conducted a considerable work on the development of the department material and technical base, organized the students' circle work. The scientific work of the department was devoting to the study of the chemical composition of the Quaternary geological period soils. In the early 60's of the last century, 2 associate professors worked at the Chemistry Department. Associate Professor Osipov A.N. organized the production of demonstrative books on chemistry at a sufficiently high level.

From 1963 to 1966, Associate Professor Voloshin I.I. was in charge of the Chemistry Department. Currently, the material and technical base of the department was developing significantly; a glass workshop was creating.

From 1966 to 1969, Associate Professor Lysenko F.U. was in charge of the department, he continued the best traditions of his predecessors. The department was locating during his leadership on the 1st and 2nd floors of the renovated three-storey building on the street. Perekopskaya.

Associate Professor Yavonenko A.F. was electing as the department head in 1969. The biochemical laboratory was creating under his leadership, which became a powerful base for performing topical scientific research. At the same time, Bondarchuk Yu.V. became a postgraduate student of the department and soon defended of the candidate dissertation in chemistry under the guidance of Associate Professor Androsova M.V.

Associate Professor, Candidate of Chemical Sciences Ivashina G.O. became an employee of the department in 1973.

Since 1973, Associate Professor Androsova M.V. became the Chemistry Department Head.  At this time, an analytical laboratory was organizing to deal with the analysis of toxic industrial wastes, and economic and contractual studies was starting.

Professor Boldirev A.I. was electing as the Department Head in 1976. Work began to determine the quality composition of Kherson’s sewage network under his leadership.

In 1978, the department was moving to the new building on the street. University, 27 (8th floor), where it is locating to this day.

From 1986 to 2006 Associate Professor Ivashina G.O. was the Chemistry Department Head.

The material and technical base of the department has significantly improved under her leadership. Much attention was paying to the systematization and improvement of scientific work, the development of economic and contractual research. Much attention was paying to public education authorities, schools, and new methods of teaching were testing.

The Chemistry Department was reorganizing by the decision of the Kherson State University Academic Council (protocol № 11 of 03.07.2006). The following departments were opening on its basis: The Organic and Biological Chemistry Department (order № 506-д from 07.07.2006) under the guidance of Associate Professor, Candidate of Chemical Sciences Rechitskyi O.N. and The General and Inorganic Chemistry Department under the direction of Associate Professor, Candidate of Physico-mathematical Sciences Ivanishchuk S.M.

From November 2012 to December 2017, Professor, Doctor of Chemical Sciences Ezikov V.I. headed of the Organic and Biological Chemistry Department.

Introducing innovative technologies into the educational process was starting by the forces of both departments; work on updating of the material and technical base was carrying out; the research work of students was intensifying through the creation of student problem groups. The implementation of the economic-contractual theme «Control over the chemical composition of the Kherson’s enterprises sewage that enters in the city’s sewer system» (state registration number 0105 IO 00669) continued under the contract with MU «Khersonskyi Vodokanal», and from 2015 – «Control over the sewage state of the PJSC «Chaplynskyi maslozavod» (scientific supervisor is Candidate of Physico-mathematical Sciences Ivanishchuk S.M.).

From January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010, research was carried out in the laboratory of organic substances synthesis at the expense of the state budget on the topic «Synthesis and study of the nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds and their derivatives biological activity» (scientific adviser Candidate of Chemical Sciences Rechytskyi O.N.).

From March 2014 to February 2016 the initiative theme "Development of the students' independent work content in the study of chemical disciplines" (№0113 И002738) was carrying out in Organic Synthesis Laboratory under the guidance of Candidate of Chemical Sciences Rechitskyi O.N.

The Chemistry and Pharmacy Department was creating from the Organic and Biological Chemistry Department and the General and Inorganic Chemistry Department under the leadership of Associate Professor, Candidate of Physico-mathematical Sciences Ivanishchuk S. M. by the decision of the Kherson State University Academic Council (Order No. 554-D of June 27, 2018).

The Chemistry and Pharmacy Department is the graduating department for the training of specialists of higher education

  • degree "Bachelor" in the specialties: 102 Chemistry, 014.06 Secondary education (chemistry) and 226 Pharmacy, industrial pharmacy;
  • degree "Master" in the specialties:102 Chemistry, 014.06 Secondary education (chemistry).

The chemistry and educational technology laboratory has been established with the promotion of the Kherson State University Rectorate in 2018, material support for eight functioning specialized training laboratories has been significantly upgraded. The department carrying out extensive career guidance, working on the optimization of the teaching staff.

To date, 1 Doctor of Chemical Sciences, 2 Candidates of Chemical Sciences, 2 Candidates of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1 Candidate of Physico-mathematical Sciences, 2 Candidates of Biological Sciences, 2 Candidates of Technical Sciences, 2 Candidates of Pedagogical Sciences, 1 lecturer are working at the department.
