The Kherson State University Scientific Library is one of the oldest and largest Vyshevsky collections in the Kherson region. A peer of the university, the library has become an integral part of its history. From the library of the Yurievsky Teacher's Institute (several hundred books) to the modern information center the difficult but significant and interesting way has passed. During this period, the work of the library was headed by A. Bilich, K. Bialystok, Alla Shaganyan, Yulia Kuznetsova, Larisa Korzh.


Books from the collection of rare and valuable editions

For 100 years, a unique multi-branch library fund has been collected, with more than half a million documents in Ukrainian, English, Bulgarian, Spanish, Italian, German, Polish, Russian, Turkish, French. The fund includes scientific, scientific-methodical, educational, fiction, periodicals on both traditional and electronic media. 63% of the total fund is scientific literature. The number of scientific works of the University scientists and the dissertation fund is constantly increasing. Over the last decade, qualitative changes have occurred in the main book stock, replenished with the works of Ukrainian historians, cultural figures, and teachers, in particular M. Hrushevsky, D. Yavornytsky, M. Drahomanov, S. Rusova, and others. A considerable number of books on Ukrainian studies appeared, and the fiction fund was updated by works of previously forbidden or forgotten writers.

The pearl of the library is a collection of rare and valuable publications. In 2011, in order to ensure storage and rational use, full work was carried out to identify valuable documents in the main book depository and in other departments of the library. The scientific organization of the fund was handled by Marina Suzyova, the reference and bibliographic apparatus was created by Lyudmila Voinova, Valentina Koval. university, and the Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Services Vladimir Chepko in 2012 allocated and furnished the premises for the Fund of Rare and Valuable Editions, which stores more than 4 thousand documents of the XIX-XX centuries. (1826-1946), in particular "The Critique of Pure Reason" by I. Kant (1902), "The Sun" by K. Jung (1898), "Physiological Psychology" by T. Tsigen (1909), "The Universal psychology with physiognomy »by I. Sikorsky (1912), in-life publications by O. Blok (1916), K. Balmont (1912), M. Chernyavsky (1920) and other scientific and artistic publications in Ukrainian, Russian , in English, French and German.

The holdings of the Scientific Library are constantly being replenished by editions of the National Institute for Strategic Studies, scientific institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Scientific Institute of Harvard University. Most of the replenishment of the library's funds is made up of gifts from higher educational establishments of Ukraine, charitable foundations, university teachers, students. Thanks to the Millennium Library project of the British Council, which is part of a long-term global partnership program, the library has received 250 volumes of world classics in English.

With the assistance of Dr. Jakub Forst-Battagli, director of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Kiev, 140 volumes of literature in German from various fields of knowledge were donated to the library.

Oleg Mishukova, who for many years headed the University Library Board. The library of the Nazarene family was also donated to the library fund, and more than 500 books were graduated from our university. 

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the University, a personal collection of books was presented to the library by the People's Artist of Ukraine, Professor, Head of the Department of Fine Arts and Design Volodymyr Chuprina. The gifts include valuable editions of art, albums from the late 19th - early 20th centuries.

The heads, departments of Tetyana Chmara and Elena Petroshuk are in the lead, responsible work on staffing and storage organization of the fund.

The total area of the library is 1555,5m2. There are 3 subscriptions and computerized reading rooms for the total number of places for readers - 360. Every year, all structural units of the library serve about 35 thousand users. High quality service is provided in. at. The Scientific Library has been operating in the new information technology mode since 2002 and has free access to the Internet. The library web page, run by Inna Marchenko from the first days, contains information about the library, its activities and services, its own databases, includes an illustrative series that provides a virtual reflection of the dynamic life of the library: photos of the most interesting elements of exhibitions, mass events and more. The system of internal and external calls, provides users with navigation of Internet resources.

 
Issuance of sets of educational literature to freshmen

The first electronic database of the library was the elibrary.kspu.edu electronic catalog developed by the program of the university specialists. As of January 2019, the database covers 121421 bibliographic records, which fully reflects the library's stock. Directory cataloging director Irina Markovich and librarian I category Natalia Kondaurova are updating and editing the catalog.

In 2012, then, Professor Alexander Spivakovsky presented a special gift - a laptop, which became a kind of impetus for innovative projects. In the same year, the information and bibliographic department, the service department were computerized, the number of computers in the manning and scientific department of documents was increased, in reading rooms, which expanded the functions and services of the library.

A new form of document exhibiting has been launched - the virtual exhibition has expanded the ability to inform users online and became the basis for the creation of a new database.

In 2013, a new Virtual Help service was introduced to help users get professional bibliographic help online.

The willingness of the Scientific Library to contribute to the university's ranking has led to the initiation of a number of innovative projects. The role of the library in supporting the open access philosophy at the university has become particularly important. Work on the creation of an open archive of eKhSUIR University began in 2012. This project was mastered by Victoria Sturin, Oksana Blinova, Susanna Kasparova, Tatiana Havrylyuk. In 2014, the eKhSUIR University electronic repository was registered with OPEN DOAR and ROAR international open access registers. Today, the repository makes it possible to make the scientific works of our staff as accessible as possible to the world scientific society. The repository is constantly evolving, new sections are being opened, and the data bank is being updated. The achievements of the University's scientists are presented in more than 7,437 documents, the number of views as of January 2019 is more than 268799 in different countries of the world (Canada, USA, Germany, Japan, France,

Switzerland, Italy, China, etc.). According to the web rankings of RANKING WEB OF REPOSITORIES by Webometrics, the University repository ranks 34th among more than 300 Ukrainian higher educational establishments, with size 27, Visibility - 42, Files Rich - 44, Scholar - 32. Kherson State University - the only higher Kherson, whose repository is in this rating.

Scientific information and bibliographic work is one of the most important activities of the library. How effectively it is organized depends on the successful solution of the main task of the university library - the scientific and informational support of the educational process.

The library specialists not only provide informational support for the main tasks of the university, but also carry out independent work in the field of book and library science. Given the information demand of readers, it creates its own bibliographic products. Within the limits of the scientific theme of the library "Modern approaches to information and library support of scientific researches in higher educational establishments of Ukraine in the context of the European educational space" the preparation of scientific-auxiliary editions, thematic, current, bibliographic, guidelines, methodical recommendations and practical guides, information analytical reviews. In recent years, 15 such publications have been prepared, 8 published. Information support for research topics is maintained. Leading bibliography of Rim Kharchevnikov provides free access to a wide range of information sources, regardless of format, execution of complicated information. In the course of the year, bibliographers provide about 1,000 consultations on the definition of UDCs to scientific papers.

The Scientific Library is actively involved in the formation of national abstract resources. A database is created for the informational project Ukrainaika Naukovna and the Ukrainian abstract journal Dzherelo. The first step in this direction was a joint project with the State Scientific Pedagogical Library. V. Sukhomlinsky for abstracting the collection of scientific works "Pedagogical Sciences". Today, on the initiative of the Scientific Library, agreements on information cooperation between the University and the Institute of Problems of Information Registration of NAS have been concluded Of Ukraine.

The database provides abstract information about the following professional periodicals of the KSU: "Black Sea Botanical Journal", scientific bulletins of KSU: "Economic Sciences", "Linguistics", "Psychological Sciences", "Law Sciences" and the collection of scientific works "Information Technologies in Education ». The forms of library activity are changing, the boundaries of library space are constantly expanding, and the traditional analytical function of the library is being modified. Since 2012, periodicals included in scientometric databases have been monitored, lists of scientific journals are compiled, information is displayed on the library's website.

In April 2017, a joint project of the Scientific Library and the Department of Informatics, Software Engineering and Economic Cybernetics began, with the help of which University scholars have the opportunity to obtain a publication analytics service. In particular, the service makes it possible to track the University's publishing activity on Scopus scientometric databases, Google Scholar. Gathering and studying information about scientists' publication activity makes it possible to design a science development strategy at the university.

Based on the decision of the Academic Council of the University since 2015, the library is scientific.

For several decades, library professionals have been shaping the information culture of the user. As part of the course "Fundamentals of Library and Bibliographic Knowledge", teaching for

students of all specialties and forms of education, is considered a systematic set of bibliographic knowledge, skills, skills that provides the implementation of individual information activities aimed at meeting the needs for information. The main purpose of the course is to teach readers how to navigate the flow of information, to master the search algorithm.

 Through the system of cultural and educational work, the library fulfills its humanistic mission. Age history of educational traditions, spiritual treasures of foundations determined the role of the library in the education of student youth. Thematic events, literary and music meetings, oral journals, presentations of new acquisitions, book reviews and exhibitions, thanks to the creative approach of the deputy director Larisa Voznyuk, organizer of this work, who always open the library funds, always gather like-minded people and are based on constant mutual readings.

At present, international projects are becoming more important. In May 2017, the Scientific Library initiated the thematic meeting "Kherson - Latvia: Cultural and Historical Relations" in celebration of the University's 100th anniversary, Europe Day and Science Day. The main purpose of the visit of the Latvian delegation to the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Latvia in Odessa, Oleg Veretennikov, Director of the Academic Library of the Venta Kotzere University of Latvia and colleagues was to start a close cooperation between the Scientific Library of the Kherson State University and the University of Latvia. As a result of the meeting, an agreement on cooperation between Kherson and Latvian universities was signed. The signing of the agreement between the two higher states of the European states, the creative and warm atmosphere of the meeting gives hope for the development of joint cultural and scientific projects.

The Scientific Library is active in the field of library affairs. The Director of the Library is a member of the Scientific and Methodological Commission of the Higher Education Sector of the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. As a methodological center for Kherson University libraries, the University Library develops partnerships with librarians and provides information and methodological support for the implementation of innovative approaches to library practice. It is thanks to the competence of the leading methodologist Olga Kozlova that high-level scientific and practical seminars, consultations on the organization of work in universities' libraries are held.

Library specialists are always actively involved in scientific conferences of leading libraries of Ukraine. The Scientific Library is an active member of the Ukrainian Library Association, the director Natella Arustamova is a board member of the Kherson Regional Library Society.

In March 2019 with the assistance of Oleksandr Spivakovsky, People's Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (VIII convocation), First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Science and Education of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Head of the Committee - 2016-2019), Candidate of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Informatics, Software Engineering and Economic Cybernetics, Honorary Professor of the Jan Dlugosz Academy, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, Honored Education Worker of Ukraine and, a member of the Specialized Scientific Council of the Institute of Information Technologies and Teaching Aids of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine (now Rector of Kherson University of Derivatives) and Vinnyk Maxim Oleksandrovych, Vice-Rector for Financial-Economic and Scientific-Pedagogical Work, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Informatics , a member of the specialized scientific council K 67.051.02 there were two new premises:
CONFERENCE HALL - high-speed Wi-Fi modern interactive space (interactive whiteboard, projectors, TV) skype, live broadcast, climate control.
KOVORKING HALL - modern design, high-speed Wi-Fi, easy-to-use TV with additional devices, photo-zone, climate control and the ability to use all the information services of the Scientific Library.
These are ideal platforms for generating ideas and opportunities. The Scientific Library organizes and helps organize seminars, webinars, lectures, trainings, workshops, creative and literary evenings, meetings with partners and other events in this space.

The modern library of our institution is undergoing a transformation process. The modernization of the higher education system in the country and the development of information technologies have led to the growing role of the library as the main link in the information and technological infrastructure of science. The staff of the Scientific Library has made a lot of efforts to not only lose its position in the conditions of informatization of the society, but also to become a leading scientific and information center of the university.
