Postgraduate studies at Kherson State University were opened in 1992 by a decree of the Ministry of education of Ukraine in 8 scientific specialties. At the Department of Botany in different years there was a postgraduate course in the specialties 03.00.05 Botany, 03.00.26 Mycology and 03.00.16 Ecology. During the years of the postgraduate program's existence, 8 PhD theses were defended, among the graduates of the Postgraduate Program, 2 men received the degree of Doctor of Biological Sciences. in 2016, the faculty licensed the training of applicants for the 3rd (educational and scientific) level of Higher Education-doctors of Philosophy PHD in the specialty 091 Biology. Currently, 3 people receive the qualification of Doctor of Philosophy at the Department.

A significant place in the Graduate Department is given to working with talented students. Student research groups are functioning fruitfully:" Floristics "(headed by Professor M. F. Boyko)," Ecology, taxonomy and geography of vascular plants "(headed by Professor of the Department of Botany, Associate Professor I. I. Moisienko)," Likhenology "(headed by Professor A. E. Khodosovtsev)," Biomophology " (headed by Associate Professor N. R. Pavlova). Problem groups consist of the best students. At the group meetings, theoretical issues related to the modern development of biological science are discussed, and routes of field scientific expeditions are developed. Under the guidance of the teaching staff, students published 30 scientific papers. Students under the guidance of teachers of the department take part in all-Ukrainian Olympiads in biology, all-Ukrainian competitions of scientific papers in biology dedicated to fundamental and Applied Research. According to the results of the work of student creative teams, Valery Darmostuk became the prize-winner of the student Olympiad in biology (Diploma of the III degree of the All-Ukrainian student Olympiad in biology, Zhytomyr State Pedagogical University named after Ivan Franko, 2015). Post-graduate student of the Department of Botany V. V. Darmostuk received a scholarship of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for young scientists.

Thanks to the successfully implemented scientific projects of the Graduate Department of Botany to create new national nature parks "Nizhnedniprovsky", "Oleshkovsky Sands", "Dzharylgatsky" in the south of Ukraine, graduates of the specialty "Biology" of Kherson State University (G. A. Naumovich, V. V. Dzerkalo, A. A. Shaposhnikova, A. M. Sadovaya, A. A. Ponomareva, V. M. Klimenko, S. Y. Shevtsov, etc.) successfully work in new jobs.

The Department cooperates under Creative contracts with the Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve named after F. E. Kholodny of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, with the Department of Botany of Kharkiv State University, the Botanical Museum of the National Natural Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kryvyi Rih Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, etc.

In 1998, the department established a scientific laboratory of biodiversity and environmental monitoring (headed by A. E. Khodosovtsev), which in 2003 was named after the outstanding Ukrainian scientist I. K. Pachosky. In 2003, the department established the laboratory of plant ecology and Environmental Protection (head – Associate Professor I. I. Moisienko). Professor of the Department of Botany M. F. Boyko is the head of the research laboratory of Plant Introduction, created at the Agrobiostation-Botanical Garden of KHSU.

In 1992, the Department of Botany completed a scientific topic on the study of bryoflora of the steppe zone of Europe ( doctor of biological sciences, professor M. F. Boyko). In 1997, a scientific topic on the study of plant ontomorphogenesis and introduction was completed. From 2000 to 2004, the state budget research topic “Critical and taxonomic study of plants and fungi in the south of Ukraine” was carried out, new types of lichens, new forms of Mosses were described for science, and new types of adventitious plants were found for Ukraine and the region. From 2005 to 2008, the state budget scientific topic "Phytobiological and landscape diversity of limestone and loess outcrops of the Black Sea region and their protection" was carried out, during which the regularities of the processes of overgrowth of limestone and loess outcrops were revealed, and a systematic analysis of phyto - and lichenobiota was carried out.

In the late 90s of the twentieth century, the Kherson Botanical School of Professor M. F. Boyko was formed, which can solve complex scientific and methodological problems. The main directions of the school's research activities are:

study of the biodiversity of the plant and fungal world of southern Ukraine,including Crimea;

taxonomies of plants and fungi, their biomorphology, floristry, phylogeny, and sozology;

conducting environmental monitoring and phyto - indication; research of anthropogenic changes and protection and rational use of plants and fungi, nature reserve fund, Phyto-pollution of ecosystems, bio-destruction of ancient monuments, phylogenetic and ecological aspects of the biosynthesis of organic substances and the content of heavy metals in plants of natural and cultural ecosystems;

methodological foundations of teaching Botanical disciplines.
