From the history of chair formation

The Department of Ukrainian Literature was established in 1940 at t Kherson Institute of Public Education (HINO). In 2003, the Department of Ukrainian Literature was renamed into the Department of Ukrainian Literary Studies. The main purpose of the educational work of the members of the Department of Ukrainian Literary Studies is to prepare a new type of vocabulary teacher who would
meet the highest modern requirements: he would be a nationally conscious intellectual, focused on universal values, a true master of conducting extraordinary lessons in his native language and literature; he would be erudite, he would seek for external and internal perfection and self-education, and  be ready to work according to the requirements of a single European educational space.
One of the tasks of the department is to provide philological and special literary studies of future teachers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary for the introduction of new information technologies and pedagogical innovations in the educational process. Much attention is paid to the problematic presentation of key issues of literary theory, the relationship in the teaching of literary disciplines, the formation of the skills of analysis of literary works in the spirit of modern requirements of science.
  The task of the department is to create conditions for students to develop an internal need for continuous improvement and realization of creative opportunities, meeting their demand, principle, intelligence, consciousness of their duty to become the central figure of the new Ukrainian school.
The starting point of the concept of activity of the department is the entry into the European Higher Education Area. The implementation of the tasks set before the department requires the objectivity and scientific validity of literary facts, historicism and consistency in teaching material, the practical value of learning outcomes, the interconnectedness and complementarity of the learned subjects.
This approach provides:
- extensive literary studies of future teachers of the Ukrainian language and literature, Ukrainian studies, English and literature;
- formation of skills and analytical approach to literary phenomena;
- formation of literary competence;
- formation of the foundations of the general cultural level of a highly educated person who is free to navigate in the literary process of  both Ukraine and the world;
- education by means of literary disciplines of a nationally determined person, capable of living and creating the Ukrainian state, the Ukrainian culture and being open to other cultures;
- ability to actively apply knowledge of fundamental disciplines, advanced achievements in the field of literary studies, the ability to use modern research methods in practice, to introduce innovative technologies in the educational process.
Today there are 7 teachers at the department: Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor, Head of the Chair Demchenko A.V., Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Chukhontseva N.D., Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Nemchenko I.V., Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Bondarenko  LG, Senior Lecturer Galagan V.V., Candidate of Philology, Senior Lecturer Tsepkalo T.O., Lecturer Chaura N.S.
In 1992, a postgraduate course on specialty 10.01.01 - Ukrainian Literature was created at the department, in which 2 postgraduate students study today.
   Nowadays the department prepares specialists in the specialty "Ukrainian language and literature" with additional study of disciplines of the following specialties: English and foreign literature; editing educational publications; documentary science, media linguistics.
   Education in the specialty "Ukrainian Language and Literature" is carried out in the following forms: full-time and part-time on the basis of budget financing of the part of the places and at the expense of individuals (mostly) and legal entities.
   The department provides teaching of such disciplines: introduction to literary criticism, children's literature, folklore, foundations of scientific researches, theory of literature, history of Ukrainian literature, mythological and non-mythological schools in literary studies, diaspora literature, modern trends of Ukrainian literature in higher education, literary studies, post-modern Ukrainian literature.
The lecturers of the department fruitfully cooperate with the teachers-linguists of the Academic Lyceum at Kherson State University, Kherson Regional Lyceum, Kherson Men's Gymnasium, the basic secondary educational institutions of Kherson.
    Collaboration with Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland) and Maria Skłodowska-Curie University in Lublin was established in the fields of research and advanced training (associate professor A.V. Demchenko).
Scientists of the Department of Ukrainian Literary Studies pay great attention to  the scientific work with students. Significant achievements are observed in this respect, in particular in recent years:  students of the Faculty of Philology and Journalism have won prizes at the All-Ukrainian Olympiads in  the Ukrainian Language and Literature; scientific work of student I. Stadnik, performed under the guidance of associate professor A.V. Demchenko took 1st place at the All-Ukrainian Student Research Contest.
 The students of the faculty constantly participate in the faculty, university, city, regional, regional and All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conferences.
Due to the need to activate students' independent work, the teachers of the departments conduct serious work on the development of methodological manuals and recommendations for the organization of independent work in academic disciplines. In 2008, two educational and methodological materials were published,
manuals: "Materials for monitoring the quality of knowledge in the courses" History of Ukrainian Literature (X - XX centuries) "," Methods of teaching Ukrainian literature "and" Materials for monitoring the quality of knowledge in the history of Ukrainian literature and literary disciplines. " electronic versions of plans for lectures, practical classes, independent work, final tests, etc.
For the purpose of professional growth  of the teachers of the department work scientific-methodical seminar was organized, the plan of which was made taking into account actual problems of literary criticism.
   The department successfully runs a research laboratory "Ukrainian Literature in the English-speaking World" (supervisor - Nemchenko I.V.). The collection of scientific and literary and artistic materials "The Bulletin of the Tavriya Foundation (Center for the Study of the Ukrainian Diaspora)" (5 issues) is published. Every year 5-6 students who actively work on scientific problems of literature of the Ukrainian diaspora and have publications, receive  one-time scholarship from the Yar Slavutych Foundation on the line of the Taurian Foundation and the Research Laboratory "Ukrainian Literature in the English-speaking World". 
   The department maintains creative relations with the departments of Ukrainian literature of Mykolaiv, Kirovograd, Glukhiv and Uzhgorod universities.
In recent years,  due to the efforts of the Department teachers there have  been organized and held approximately 25 All-Ukrainian conferences and regional conferences (All-Ukrainian Student Conference "Traditions and Perspectives on National-Linguistic Personality Formation" (2004), two All-Ukrainian Student Scientific Conferences "Literature in Ukrainian Literature in Ukrainian Literature" cultural context ", (2005, 2007 and 2009), 
 “Mykola Chernyavsky and the World Literary and Artistic Context" (2008), All-Ukrainian Scientific Conference "Poetics of the Artistic Text" (2016, 2017,2018), International Scientific Conference "Mykola Kulish's Creativity in the World Historical and Literary Context" (10 -11 November 2017) The members of the department took an active part in 40 International, All-Ukrainian regional conferences.
In 2007, 2008 and 2009, the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in the specialty "Ukrainian Language and Literature" was held on the basis of the Faculty of Philology and Journalism with the active participation of all members of the department.
Problem groups were created at the department to organize the students' scientific work. The result of which is the preparation of courseworks  and final works. The Rectorate and Scientific and Methodological Council of KSU for the 2007-2008 academic year have recognized the Chair of Ukrainian Literary Studies as the best in organizing scientific work with students. 
Members of the department involve also gifted students in the scientific work. At Kherson regional center of scientific and technical creativity of student youth there is a circle "Literary Studies Studios", which is aimed at assisting in the preparation of scientific works on Ukrainian iterature, folklore and literary creativity of gifted students of the region. The associate professors of the department also successfully manage the scientific works of the students - members of the Small Academy of Sciences (associate professors Demchenko A.V., Nemchenko I.V., Chukhontseva N.D.).
