Webometrics ranking of world's universities is one of the most respected rankings in the international educational environment.

The rating has been compiled by Cybermetrics Lab (Spain) since 2004 and is published twice a year (June-July and January).

The rating is based on the assessment of the university's presence on the Internet, the level of influence of the university's publications on the world scientific progress, the "popularity" of higher education web-sites, the trust of Internet users to them.

The ranking does not analyze the educational activity of the university as a whole, but rather the representation of universities on the global Internet, which is determined by a special methodology developed in accordance with the Berlin Principles on Ranking of Higher Education Institutions, defined by UNESCO.

The subject of the analysis is the domain of the university, so the sites of departments outside the domain are not considered.

The Webometric Rating methodology is based on four indicators: Visibility, Presense, Openness, Excellence, which take into account the web domain data of the university (each indicator has a specific weight factor corresponding to its importance):

  • Visibility (50%) - evaluated via a "virtual referendum", counting all external links received by the university from third parties (citation of web pages). Subtracted from the number of backlinks and the number of domains from which backlinks originate. Therefore, it is important to have a variety of links, not the "popularity" of domain links.
  • Presence (5%) - is determined by the total number of web pages hosted on the main web domain (including all subdomains and directories) of the university, which are indexed by major commercial search engines, such as Google.
  • Transparency (10% Transparency) - Includes a citation of the top 100 Google Scholar profiles of University staff who have voluntarily attached them to the institution's official name. Data for the metric is derived from Transparent ranking: Top Universities by Google Scholar Citations..
  • High quality (Excellence, 35%) - counts the amount of research published in influential international journals. The indicator is limited to counting publications that are in the top 10 percent of the most cited in relevant fields of science. Information is provided by the SCImago Research Laboratory. When calculating this metric, data for the five-year period 2013-2017 is taken into account.
