Department of English Philology and World Literature named after Professor Oleg Mishukov

Department of English Philology and World Literature named after Professor Oleh Mishukov was created on Septemer 1, 2021 when the Department of Practice of Foreign Languages merged with the Department of Translation Studies and Applied Linguistics.

         The curriculum of speciality 035.04 Philology (German Languages and Literatures) (Translation Included) (Translation) and 035.041 Philology (German Languages and Literatures (Translation included), the first language – English) is directed towards forming the skills and abilities of translating different textual styles and genres (belles-lettres, official, scientific, publicist etc);  for speciality 035.10 Philology (Applied linguistics) – towards acquiring and developing the skills in automatic (machine) translation, automatic analysis (identification) and automatic synthesis of texts, lingware of intelligence systems, automatic annotation and documentary indexing etc. Teaching the disciplines of speciality “Philology (Applied linguistics)” is provided by the Department of Information Sciences, Software Engineering and Economic Cybernetics of Kherson State University.

         The main focus of the two curricula is vocational education, professional and scientific training in the fields directed at making algorithms for encoding, identification, interpretation, generating/creating, working out the language and speech, translation, ensuring cross-cultural communication, formation and making lingware of different intelligence systems, handling natural language information and developing the automated systems of informational work.

         The staff of the Department includes 3 Doctors of Philological Sciences, 2 Doctors of Pedagogical Sciences, 11 Candidates of Philological Sciences (PhD.) and 3 Candidates of Pedagogical Sciences (PhD (Ed.)).

         The Department staff and the students of the Department are working on scientific and research work such as “Discursive, Linguistic and Cultural Aspects of Theory and Practice of Translation” and “Influence of Linguistic and Extra-linguistic Factors on the Formation of the Specialist in the Field of Foreign Languages in Modern Multicultural Society”.

         The In-service training is focused on “Optimisation of the Process of Foreign Speech Formation among Higher Education Students”.

         The Department provides teaching for such theoretical courses as “Theory and Practice of Translation”, “Comparative Grammar of the English and Ukrainian Languages”, “Comparative Lexicology of the English and Ukrainian Languages”, “Comparative Stylistics”, “Theoretical Grammar of the English Language”, “Introduction to Translation Studies”, “Introduction to Corpus Linguistics”, “Historic Development of Applied Linguistics”, “Fundamentals of Applied and Computer Linguistics”, “Experimental Linguistics”, “Fundamentals of Making Linguistic Programmes”, “Corpus Linguistics”, “Terminology Studies”, “Language Model of Modern Business Communication”, “Theoretical, Methodological and Practical Fundamentals of Cognitive Linguistics”, “Cross-cultural Communication – Translation Peculiarities (the English Language)”, “Formal Methods of Computer Linguistics”, “Computer Lexicography”, “New Attainments in Professional Disciplines”, “Communicative Strategies of the First Foreign Language”, “Literary Text Interpretation”, “Theory and Practice of Scientific and Technical Translation”, “Methodology of Teaching Translation of Professional Disciplines at University”, “Methodology of Teaching the Foreign Language at School», “History of English of English-Speaking Countries”.

         The staff of the Department conducts practical studies in English and Turkish Oral and Written Speech, English Grammar and Phonetics, Oral and Written Practice of Translation for full- and part-time students. The Department supervises the  qualification projects (theses) of “Bachelor” and “Master” degrees (scientific supervisors: Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences (PhD (Ed)), Associate Professor Yuliya Kishchenko, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences (PhD (Ed)), Associate Professor Yana Prosiannikova, Candidate of Philological Sciences (PhD), Associate Professor Oleksandr Svyrydov, Candidate of Philological Sciences (PhD), Associate Professor Kateryna Frantsuzova, Candidate of Philological Sciences (PhD), Associate Professor Olena Khan, Candidate of Philological Sciences (PhD), Associate Professor Alla Tsapiv).

         One of the curriculum components is educational and professional practice, which takes place in the surroundings similar to the future professional conditions.

         To organise the vocational experience for the students of specialities “Philology (German Languages and Literatures (Translation Included), the First Language – English)” and “Philology (Applied Linguistics)” the Department signed treaties with state and public institutions, namely: Kherson Chamber of Commerce; Translation  Bureau “Socrates”, “Private Enterprise Kyseleva A.M; Kherson Regional Library for Children named after Dniprova Chaika; Kherson branch of higher educational institution “Post-Graduate Institute “Odesa Maritime Training Center”; LLC “Kherson Maritime Center”; LLC “Avtoplaneta Plus”; Studio of Computer Design  Wezom;  Private Enterprise "Chumak"; Tourist Agency “Corsair”; LLC “Danon Dnipro”.

         The Department has high-quality means of education – laser multimedia projectors, screens, computers etc.

         The Department maintains tight relations with the Department of Foreign Languages of the Communal Institution of Higher Education "Kherson Academy of In-Service Training”, the Department of Translation and Interpretation of Mykolaiiv National University named after V.O. Suhomlynskyi,  The Department of Theory and Practice of Translation from English of Kharkiv National University named after V.N. Karazin, the Chair of Education of De Montfort University (Bedford, UK), the Department of Theory and Practice of Branch Translation of  Kherson National Technical University, the Department of Translation Studies and Cognitive Linguistics named after G. Kochur of Lviv National University named after I. Franko,  the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation of Kyiv National University named after T. Shevchenko, the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation from the English  Language of Chornomorskyi National University named after P. Mohyla.
