The visit was organized as part of the implementation of the EU program Erasmus+ project, the area "Development of Higher Education Potential": "Boosting University Psychological Resilience and Wellbeing in (Post-) War Ukrainian Nation" (101129379 - BURN - ERASMUS-EDU-2023-CBHE). Coordinated by a consortium of international partners, this event focuses on promoting practical and evidence-based resilience learning strategies and psychological support, particularly in the context of war-affected societies.
The host coordinator, Professor Lars Kulchinke (IPU Berlin) organized a warm welcome for the delegation, which includes HEIs from Ukraine, Latvia and Estonia. According to the first day's program, IPU Vice-President Professor Birgit Stürmer gave a welcome address, setting the psychotherapeutic tone by reflecting on the historical intersections of mental health support during wartime. Her insightful remarks provided an inspiring context, combining the approaches of the past with the current practice of trauma care.
The head of the research department Yuriy Nesterko introduced the work of ZENTRUN UBERLEBEN (Survival Center), which supports the rehabilitation and integration of refugees and migrants. The work of the Center is accompanied by scientific research and development of approaches to diagnosis, as well as documentation of the causes, consequences and treatment of injuries.
The head of the international department of the IPU, Carmen Shir, introduced her own work experience within the framework of the project "Social trauma in changing societies" (2012-2024). Professor Andreas Hamburger and colleagues shared the results of many years of research on social trauma and the ways of its diagnosis and psychotherapy.
BURN's study visit to Berlin promises to foster deep discussion and collaboration, paving the way for innovative approaches in resilience education and trauma care. Another step towards our common goal is to strengthen the psychological stability and well-being of universities in (post-)war Ukraine.
