KSU Associate Professor Receives Special Council of Europe Award for Story about Roma from Liubymivka
On June 19 in Strasbourg, France, the award ceremony for the Council of Europe Prize for Journalism Excellence for materials on Roma and Travellers took place.
A special jury prize for Ukrainian Roma stories was awarded to Mykola Homaniuk, Associate Professor of the Department of Geography and Ecology at Kherson State University and a PRISMA UKRAЇNA fellow at the Forum Transregionale Studien (Berlin).
The award recognized the article “From a Pilfered Nail to a Stolen Tank: The Role of a Media Event in the Consolidation of the Ukrainian Political Nation,” co-authored with Yanush Panchenko.
The piece examines the story of Roma from the village of Liubymivka, who, at the start of the full-scale invasion, captured a russian tank, a media event that became a meme and offered a new perspective on the role of Roma communities in Ukraine.
Mykola Homaniuk researches topics related to ethnic minorities, memory in occupied territories, and toponymy. Since 2022, he has been a member of the interdisciplinary research group PRISMA UKRAЇNA: War, Migration, Memory.
It should be noted that in April, by decision of the Academic Council, the Ukrainian Center for Roma Studies (UCRS) was established at KSU. The purpose of the UCRS is to conduct an in-depth study of Roma communities in Ukraine, both those who remain in the country and those forced to go abroad.
