Tuesday, December 03, 2019

The Department of Botany of the Faculty of Biology, Geography and Ecology of Kherson State University has joined the publication of the fundamental monograph "National Catalog of Biotopes of Ukraine". A powerful team of top phytosociologists, florists and biotopists of Ukraine, led by Anna Kuzemko, PhD, worked on the monograph as part of the project “Support to Ukraine in Approximation of EU Environmental Law” (APENA). The greatest contribution to the preparation of the catalog from the KSU Botany Department was made by Professor Ivan Moisienko, who is the editor of 2 of the 9 sections of the monograph and the author of several dozen articles. Also the authors of the monograph are Professor Alexander Khodosovtsev, teacher Marina Zakharova and graduate student Elena Sadova, who wrote articles on separate biotopes.
This is the first national-level monographic publication that summarizes information about all biotopes of our country. This monograph is of great importance for the implementation of European approaches to nature conservation in Ukraine. It is a significant tool in implementing a habitat approach in biodiversity conservation, building the Emerald Network in Ukraine, mapping biotopes, and more. The catalog, for each type of biotope, lists Ukrainian and English names, photographs, relationships with EUNIS biotopes, units listed in Resolution 4 of the Berne Convention and Annex I of the Settlement Directive, Green Paper of Ukraine. In addition, syntaxonomic units, ecological-floristic classifications, a list of characteristic species (mainly plants, in some cases also animals), dominants, ecological characteristics, distribution in Europe and Ukraine are indicated. In addition, the catalog contains "Methodology of field mapping of settlements".
It extends the monograph of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine, which is the beneficiary of its publication. The monograph can be viewed online at the Ministry's website or on the pages of the monograph authors in the Research Gate. https://menr.gov.ua/files/images/news_2019/23042019/Catalog_final_LR.pdf
