KSU Vice-Rector Presents Research on Life in Frontline Cities at UK Conference

Monday, June 16, 2025

Vice-Rector of Kherson State University, Doctor of Geographical Sciences and Professor Daria Malchykova took part as a speaker at the European Urban Research Association (EURA) Conference 2025, held in Bristol, United Kingdom, from 10 to 13 June.

Among more than 260 participants from across Europe, Professor Malchykova was the only representative from Ukraine!

This year’s theme — “Creating Healthy and Sustainable Cities” — brought together innovative research, policies, and practices shaping the future of cities across Europe and beyond.

Professor Malchykova presented the results of a joint research project titled:
“Cities and Vulnerable Communities Forged by War: (Un)Sustainability of Transformed Everyday Practices (Cases from De-Occupied Cities in Ukraine)”,
conducted in collaboration with Professor Ihor Pylypenko (Doctor of Geographical Sciences, KSU) and Associate Professor Anatolii Melnychuk (PhD in Geography, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv).

The research focuses on urban communities in Kherson and Izium (Kharkiv region).

Unfortunately, unlike other speakers, Ms. Daria had to speak about the realities of life in cities that have gone through occupation and are now suffering from shelling, forced to live under new conditions: providing medical services underground, teaching children online, organizing leisure activities in shelters, dealing with problems related to water and electricity — and, most tragically, losing people.

Nevertheless, even such negative processes are transformational, because despite the challenges, cities continue to live…

We continue to share the realities of life in Ukraine — particularly in frontline cities — on various platforms, while our researchers study the best practices of urban development in order to apply them in the future recovery process, — commented Rector of KSU, Oleksandr Spivakovskiy.
