Today, 20 November 2025, the Faculty of Ukrainian and Foreign Philology, Journalism and Arts of Kherson State University hosted an online workshop entitled ‘The specifics of working as a journalist in a frontline city: practical and ethical aspects’. The speaker at the event was Valentina Pestushko, a freelance journalist and war correspondent who regularly works in frontline Kherson.
Valentina talked about how journalists should prepare for trips to frontline regions, what risks they need to consider, and how to interact with people and the subjects of their stories. The speaker emphasised the importance of maintaining a safe distance, being attentive to the emotional state of interlocutors, and gathering information responsibly.
In addition, Valentina shared her experience of working under occupation, describing the peculiarities of creating materials in an environment with limited access to information and constant risks to life. According to the journalist, working in occupied territories requires maximum caution, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain the anonymity of sources, because even a minor mistake can put people at risk.
The event was attended by students and faculty members, who had the opportunity to ask the speaker questions, discuss real-life situations of frontline work, and receive practical advice on preparing journalistic materials in difficult conditions.
