KSU Vice-Rector Presented Research in Germany on Challenges Facing De-Occupied Frontline Territories

Professor, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Vice-Rector for Educational, Scientific and Pedagogical Affairs of Kherson State University, Daria Malchykova, spoke at an international seminar dedicated to the transformation of Ukraine’s labor market during russia’s full-scale invasion. The event took place on April 22 in Berlin (Germany).

The international seminar was organized by the Centre Marc Bloch in Berlin, the ZOiS, and the KIU Competence Network Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies.

As a researcher, Daria Malchykova systematically studies the situation in the frontline Kherson region. Her presentation at the seminar focused on the profound transformations of population dynamics and the labor market.

The study was titled “Demographic Hollowing and multiple stressors of the labour market in front-line de-occupied regions”. It was conducted in collaboration with Professor, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Geography and Ecology Ihor Pylypenko and Head of the Ukrainian Researchers’ Society Pavlo Ostapenko.

The research primarily focused on the challenges faced by de-occupied frontline territories, in particular population decline, labor market transformation and the accumulation of socio-economic risks.

Overall, the seminar brought together scholars from different countries and was dedicated to a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the war on Ukrainian society. Discussions focused on changes in economic geography, population mobility, labor market transformations, new vulnerabilities and forms of adaptation under conditions of prolonged war.

“The participation of a researcher from Kherson State University in such an event is an important component of the university’s international academic presence and confirms the high level of expertise of our scholars in studying Ukraine’s urgent challenges, in particular those of our native Kherson region,” emphasized KSU Rector Oleksandr Spivakovskiy.
