On April 14, 2026, Oleksandr Cheremisin took part in the IV scientific and practical conference with international participation “International Crimes of the Russian Federation – from Documentation to Punishment” in Ivano-Frankivsk. The organizer was the Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University. The conference brought together Ukrainian and foreign scientists, representatives of state authorities, human rights institutions, international experts, journalists and practitioners working in the field of documenting war crimes. The focus of professional discussions was on the issues of collecting evidence, recording testimonies of victims, the activities of state and public institutions in the process of investigating international crimes, as well as mechanisms of national and international justice. Of particular value was the interdisciplinary discussion, which allowed combining legal, historical, social and humanitarian approaches to understanding the modern military experience of Ukraine.
Within the framework of the conference, Oleksandr Viktorovych presented his own research dedicated to the experience and methodology of documenting Russian crimes in the local dimension of Kherson. In his report, he focused on oral history as one of the key tools for recording the war experience of the civilian population in the post-occupation period. Special attention was paid to the methodology of interviewing witnesses, forming a source base, archiving testimonies, as well as understanding the everyday life of the city in conditions of constant fire exposure. He especially emphasized that post-occupation Kherson forms a unique research space, where historical memory, traumatic social experience and the need for prompt preservation of testimonies for future scientific, memorial and legal practices are combined. The documentation of such testimonies today forms the foundation for the historical memory of future generations.
