A round table was held at the KSU where copyright protection was discussed using the example of Maria Prymachenko's work

On May 30, Kherson State University held a round table dedicated to the work of the outstanding Ukrainian artist Maria Prymachenko. The event was held as part of the IP Day 2023 All-Ukrainian educational campaign for the International Intellectual Property Day, which this year is held under the slogan "Women and intellectual property: a catalyst for innovation and creativity."

The round table was organized by the Department of Intellectual Property together with the Faculty of Culture and Arts of KSU. At the beginning, the dean of the Faculty of Culture and Arts, Mykola Levchenko, noted that this year the faculty is celebrating its 25th anniversary. On this occasion, the audience was invited to watch a video created by students of the musical art specialty.

"Today we will talk about the female face in art. About issues related to the work of a famous artist and at the same time about an important moment for artists - copyright. These questions will be relevant for all of us, both teachers and students," the dean emphasized.

Maria Prymachenko is a bright and well-known representative of naive art not only in Ukraine, but also throughout the world. Her works were admired by well-known world artists, including Pablo Picasso. Maria Prymachenko's name is included in the World Encyclopedia of Art, and her creative heritage includes more than 3,000 works. Unfortunately, last year the Russian occupiers destroyed a museum in the Kyiv region where works of art were kept. Some of the works were saved, and the museum is planned to be restored.

Diana Kuzyakina, deputy dean for organizational and educational work and employment, teacher of the department of cultural studies, introduced such a direction as naive art, which is characterized by originality, simplicity and symbolism, as well as style and technique.

Vitaliy Rakovich, head of the department of fine arts, spoke about the personality of the nature of artistic images in the works, the development of Prymachenko as an artist, periods of creativity and stylistics. According to him, the spiritualization of the forces of nature, the appeal to the deep experience of the people, the connection with the primitive ideas of man about the world - all this creates such a kaleidoscope of images that opens up a wide field for research. It is also promising for use in art therapy.

Many times during the event, they talked about the demand for the artist's creativity - creating a collection of clothes with reproductions of her works, toys, murals, etc. Therefore, we logically moved on to the discussion of another issue - copyright, the protection of the rights of artists and, in general, everyone who is engaged in creativity.

This issue was highlighted by Valeriya Blah, head of the intellectual property department of KhSU. Using the example of Maria Prymachenko, they talked about the commercialization of creative activity, about the fact that it is impossible to reproduce or use works without the consent of the author or owner of property rights. And also about how to check whether the work is genuine - for this you must have the passport of the painting.

"The law on copyright and related rights, which, by the way, was updated, says that during the lifetime of the author and for 70 years after his death, permission must be obtained for the use of works, including paintings. If there is no longer an author, then all issues regarding copyright are agreed with the successors. This is a general rule for all works," Valeriya Blach commented.

Mykola Levchenko emphasized that the topic of intellectual property protection is relevant for faculty applicants who are engaged in professional activities. Already now, they should think about creating their own trademark, which must be registered and obtained a corresponding certificate.
